Playoffs on Sept 21

Joe (the league co-ordinator) emailed that there was an unanimous decision to play the playoffs on Sept 21. Roshombo plays Westgate at 6.30PM, and we face CCF at 7.40PM.

Desis who won't be able play on Sept 21: Apurva (in India), Sapna/Manish (perhaps on vacation).

That will be a long break from the games. Perhaps need extra practice sessions to keep in game shape?

Qualified for the playoffs

Owing to the win over St.Timothy's, we qualify for the playoffs, and we play CCF in the opening game. Roshombo takes on Westgate, and the winners of these two games play in the finale. The date for the playoffs is still under review. Could be one of these dates: 9/14, 9/21, or 9/28.

This gives our Coach and Captain to experiment with the lineup for the game against St.Timothy's on 8/24, and given that there are a few injured players, almost all the subs will get to start.

If we play CCF with the same intensity as we did two weeks ago, we stand a very good chance of being the only team to beat them this season. We lost the first game 7-9, and the second one 10-12. Time we analysed the weaknesses of CCF, and worked on it. The CCF in-fielders are kinda slow to react, especially at 2B, and 3B positions. When they bat, they hit a lot to LF, and especially pretty close to the line. Also, a few people on their team are slow runners, need to capitalize on that and make double plays.

Hmm... as long as we are consistent with the hitting as we have been over the past few weeks, we have a great chance of winning it all.

Go Desis!

Desis 13 - St. Timothy Lutherans 7

And what a win it was! And they qualify for the playoffs with this convincing win.

Lots of things went well tonite, good coaching from non-playing captain Amit, great third base coaching from Ranjeet, excellent hitting from Karen, Reshma, Leena, Appu, Tim, Sharath, Chethan, Ashok; and yes, Sapna got a hit, and scored a run. Solid pitching from Karthik, and good catching by Sumi behind the base. Chethan took a few outstanding catches in deep center field. And did I mention the running between the bases??

Karen has stepped up her level of play by a couple of notches, she looks very comfortable at first base, hits beyond the infield, and runs well. Leena did an awesome job at second base, and helped on the double play which won the game. Reshma is a power hitter now, and her practice sessions at the batting cages are paying off.

Chethan's inside the park home run helped the Desis' score 3 runs in the very first inning, and everyone in the lineup got on base during this inning. After being up 4-2 after the first inning, the Desis were leading 6-4, 7-4, and eventually won 13-7 at the end of four innings, after scoring 6 runs at the top of the 4th inning.

Good job everyone. Job well done. The Desis look like they are poised to eventually win the championship.

Special thanks to the excellent cheering support from Shamith, Rishon and Ria.

An almost win!

The Desi's faced the league leaders CCF on Aug 10, at 7.40PM. A win today, and two wins against St.Timothy's confirm a 3rd place in the league. We have already qualified for the playoffs, with two wins, given that St.Timothy's haven't won a single game so far.

With Chethan away, Amit and Appu co-Captained the Desis. Karthik was the starting pitcher, Amit at 3B, Appu at SS, Karen (2B), Anjali (1B), Leena (RF), Manish (RCF), Reshma (LCF), Naveen (LF), and Sumi as the catcher. CCF scores two runs in the first inning, the Desis score 1. A closely played battle, with the advantage shifting between the teams in different innings, featuring great in-fielding by Karen, good pitching by Karthik, strong hitting by most of the batters. Going into the last innning, CCF was leading 10-8. With two outs, the Desis did great to equalize as time ran out. When the extra inning ended, Desis lost 10-12. Ashok, Sharath and I took good catches in the outfield, Karen, Reshma, Amit, Appu, Anjali, Manish and I got good hits. With Karen perhaps being tonite's MVP?

This game brought out the best in the Desis, and even though we lost by two runs, we came together as a team, enjoyed being in the field, and showed the best team in the league that we are equally good, if not better. This was perhaps the best game the Desis played so far.

Good job, team.

Game 1

CCF 9 - Desi Nationals 7

A very close game.
The first inning saw the Desi's scoring 4 runs, with Karthik hitting a in the park home run, resulting in 3 runs being scored. Good hitting, Karthik. Being up 6-2, a serious of fielding errors allowed CCF to outscore the Desi's. And in the bottom of the 4th, the CCF went ahead. Good hitting by Coach, Appu, Anjali & Karthik. Excellent pitching from Karthik & Amit.

Post-mortem notes from the game:

Good things:
1. Pitching was solid and very consistent. Pace of pitching was good as we need to work quickly.
2. Hitting by the guys was good.
3. Team spirit. Everyone was hyped up and into the game.
4. Outfield play was consistent and accurate.
5. Good patience, for most part, at the plate to wait for first strike.

Things to improve on:
1. When there are baserunners, there should be ONE person helping and that is either the 1st base coach (for runners at first) or 3rd base coach (for runners coming past 2nd base).
2. Team should know batting order and avoid confusion duing our batting. If you are a guy, know which guy is hitting in front of you so that you can be ready. (Same thing for the girls)
3. When running to first base.....do NOT look at the ball. Focus on getting to 1st base and keep your ear open to hear the 1st base coach.
4. When fielding, KNOW what you are going to do IF the ball is hit to you
5. Wait for the umpire to call TIME before turning your back. The other teams have aggressive baserunners who are very opportunistic!!
6. Infield needs to be ready!! There were too many balls that went through the infield or weren't fielded properly.
7. Make sure coach is better prepared for PRAYER and DEVOTION (that one was from me)
8. When fielding, if there is more than one runner on base, all hell breaks loose. Stick to the plan or listen to Appu(or whoever). Designate one person to be the "voice" and only they should yell out instructions.
9. Hitting, although explosive at times, was not consistent. We were swinging at bad pitches and not waiting for the first strike towards the end of the game. Stay focused up there and get in a good swing!!!!

What time is it????? - Excellent team summary for the season opener

....................it's Gametime!!!!

Tonight at 8:10 pm, the Desi Nationals embark on their 2nd season in the San Jose City League. The team has had quite the turnover since the inaugural season. But, with renewed focus and determination, Coach C-Cube has promised that this year's version will be exciting to watch.

"One of the exciting things about last year was the evolution of the team. We were very raw at the beginning, but you could clearly see everybody coming into form and incorporating best practices on the field. We were peaking at the end of the season and we were right there with the city champions last September in the playoff round. We gained confidence and learned how to win and that's something that will carry over to this year."

There are a number of key free agent acquisitions that will help this year's squad. Heavy hitters Sharath Shankar and Ashok Vittal join the team to add some much needed punch to a team that averaged only 5.7 runs last year. "They've developed quite a bit in Spring Training. Clearly, they will help us out in the outfield and I look forward to them smacking the ball around at the plate", says Cube.

Their spouses, Sumitra and Reshma, have also signed multi-year deals and have made huge strides in pre-season workouts. Scouts are projecting both of them to see plenty of game action. "I don't think they knew how to hold a bat before our first practice and now they attack the ball with reckless abandon!!", says one Scout.

Another husband and wife tandem to join are JR and Karen Sudre. This particular free agent acquisition articulates the far-reaching capability of the Desi National scouting system. Touring the world, they landed on a farm in France where they found this couple running circles around their competition in the local vin et fromage leagues. Quickly coming to terms with a deal, they both inked their future with the Desi Nationals in March. Karen is immediately being appointed the steady 3rd baseman, which was an obvious void last year for the Nationals. JR brings a solid work ethic and 'can run like the wind'. Learning of the opportunity with the Nationals, Timothee Dargnies - a much heralded rookie in the 'vin et fromage' league, consulted with JR and Karen to assess the opportunity. After a quick meeting at C-Cube's house, he signed on as well!! "We have searched the world for talent in re-shaping our team and have discovered France to be a haven for softball talent", says Cube. Another burner, Timothee will definitely help the Nationals on the offensive front, as well.

To close out the transformation of the 2006 Nationals, the Management team secured two more potential studs - Sapna and Manish Babladi. Both have pure and raw athletic talent and are quick learners according to the Assistant Coaches. "Both are a bit banged up, but very excited to play through the pain. I think they bring much-needed energy and eagerness to the squad", says Cube.

So, with all the new acquisitions......where do the veterans fit in, you ask?? Well, not to worry - there are still many familiar faces joining in the fun. Amit and Anjali Rele went through some heated contractual discussions before ending their holdout. "It was important find their price point and ensure their long-term commitment to the team," says Cube. Now that they're fully on board, they are ready to make a difference. Anjali will assume primarly duties at 1st Base and continue to rake the ball at the plate. "I'm going for League MVP this year," says Rele. Her hubby, Amit, is working on some nasty stuff as he preps to take the mound this year and bring home some awards, as well.

Helping Amit on the mound is another Cy Young candidate in Karthik Vugane. Last year, Karthik helped solidify the rotation with his superb control and speedy work. Opposing batters are sure to wince when they see this stalwart take the rubber. Also, his off-season work looks like it is paying off at the plate and he is learning how to go the opposite field.

Rounding out the infield is breakout candidate Leena Janardanan. After ending her holdout in early March, the regular 2nd baseman has come to practice with a thirst to get better. Although tiny in stature, she has fulfilled her rigorous offseason workouts and surprised the team with her arm and bat. "I'm expecting big things, really big things this year from LJ," says Cube. She'll look to warrant the big contract re-structuring with her double play buddy, Apurva Chandra. AC had an MVP-like season last year and really is the ignition of the batting lineup. For OBP, there was no one better on the team than AC last year. His ability to take the 'walk' and score runs will continue to determine how successful the Nationals are on offense. His pending free agency is a concern to coach, but will inevitably be motivation for him to perform well this year.

Another position that will be anchored for most of the season is Left Field. Naveen Javarappa has worked relentlessly during the Winter season on his fielding techniques and came to pre-season 10 pounds under his 2006 playing weight. "I wanted to be more swift on the bases and track down every ball in the outfield. I believe I can do that now!!", says Javarappa. Well, the Nationals will need that ability since they are still projected to finish below the top-tier teams of the league.

The Nationals will begin their season at Calabazas Park in San Jose tonight. Gates open at 7:30. It promises to be an exciting season for all ticket holders.

Let's Play Ball!!!

Pitchers and Catchers report

Well, we had a great practice last Friday at Central Park. We have some good hitting talent on the team. Karen, Reshma, Sapna, JR, Ashok, and Manish are new additions to our team this year and promise to be keepers!!

Hopefully, at our next practice we'll talk about the rules and work on some fielding, too. Since our first game will be on Friday, June 22nd - we have 5 weeks to practice.

I'd like to have two practices/week until June 17th. Therefore, we will be meeting on Wednesdays (at 6:00 PM) and Sundays (5:00 PM) going forward. After the season starts, we can settle on Sundays (most likely). Let's plan on Central Park in Santa Clara. Link is below: (http://www.ci.santa-clara.ca.us/park_recreation/pr_central.html)
