Game one..

Some words of encoragement from Coach:

Desi Nationals!!!

Well, last night didn't end up the way we wanted, but I think we did real well. Especially considering this was our first 'go-live' on a softball field.....ever! !

We did a lot of good things. I think we all did a good job hitting the ball. It's not easy to stand up there and judge if the ball is a 'strike' or 'ball'. We did fine...and you should all be excited about our next game!!! We're going to get get better after each one. We'll work on the pitching and on the fielding. All that stuff will come along nicely.....we' re just getting acquainted with the game. There were some really nice plays in the field. Appu with a nice sliding catch in Left Field. Leena catching the third out at 2nd base. Preeti S....with a great job behind the plate. Sammy put together a gutsy performance on the mound (not easy standing in the middle of the diamond and making your league debut!!!). Doohms.....with some nice snags at first base. Amit knocked down a hard hit ball right at him and made a couple inning ending outs. Naveen with a fashionable catch in Center field and hustling all over to help back up. Srivalli and Preeti A. running after the balls hit to the outfield and getting them back in as quickly as possible. Shrisha hustling down the line for our only hit in the game!! DJ with a good eye and waiting for her pitches....( sorry about the strikeout).. .

We had a motivational speaker at our company retreat last week. Jim Tunny, NFL referee for 30 years, said the following, "Remember, it's not the aptitude, but the attitude that will determine your altitude and intestinal fortitude. Not only is that a tough tongue-twister, but very true of the Desi Nationals!!! I loved the spirit that we all had during the game.

Please don't get down and feel like we can't compete. We were right in the game for the first couple innings. We'll continue to have fun and eventually kick some ass out there.

Have a great weekend....and we'll have a quick practice on Wednesday night...hope that works for everyone!!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And here is what "Bad Boy", our first baseman has to say:

Peepal,
We did great today! I think we have a lot of potential... ..please don't feel disheartened by the result. We have never played this game before. So, suck it up & lets make sure we improve on this result.
Most importantly, remember to have fun along the way!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And me says:

Great game, guys! It was so much fun being in the field, playing under the lights, and living the true American past-time. Hustling out into the field, hearing the cheers from ur team, pitching, fielding, catching, hitting, trash-talking.. hmm.. all fun!
Thanks to our photographers, Peru and Amar. They caught some great moments! Thanks again, guys! The photos uploaded arent in the chronological order, blogspot does not give me enuff freedom to do it.

Q & A's from the league co-ordinator

1. We are allowed to field 10 players in the field
a. they can be 4 girls and 6 guys?
in this case you can only play the 4 females and 5 males with the automaitc out where consecutive males bat in the lineup. you may however field and bat 6 females and 4 males. the key is to not have the advantage of playing more males.
2. We can bat maximum of 12 players (it has to alternate at every spot.....male, female, male, female, etc)
a. can we have folks fielding that will not bat?
12 players alternating male and female may bat, the batting order must remain the same, but players may play any position. all field players must bat.
3. Is there sliding?
sliding is allowed
4. Does the catcher have to squat on every pitch like regular baseball? (guessing so b/c of umpire)
the catcher may squat or take a knee, follow the lead of the other team since you will be batting first on Friday
5. Are there passed balls where the base runners can advance a base if the catcher lets the ball by?
no passed balls or wild pitches, runner's may not advance
6. for base runners - Is there leading off the bases?
no leading off
7. If I take player A out of the game in the 2nd inning, can I put player A back later in the game?
no player re-entry once a player is removed from the batting lineup
8. What if 8 guys and 4 girls show up for our first game.
a. Can we still bat 12 people without taking automatic outs (or does it have to be male, female, male, female throughout the order?)
minimum 8 batters to have an official game, maximum 12 batters. batting lineup must alternate gender. automatic out only occurs when consecutive male batters. you may bat 11 with an automatic out if batter #10 and batter #11 are male, no automatic out if back to back females
b. or, do we have to bat only 8 to avoid automatic outs?
I would suggest batting and fielding 8 players (4 male / 4 female)
c. can we still field 10 in this case....and bat only 8?
you cannot field 10 and bat 8. all players in the field must bat.

Last practice before the season starts

New venue for the practice session:

Venue: Mise Park in San Jose (the same venue where the league games will be played).
Time: 7PM.
Date: July 26, 2006.

Updates from Coach C:

Apparently, the league runs a tight ship about punctuality. If we don't have 8 people at exactly 7:00, we forfeit the game and lose. And, if we don't have at least 4 guys or girls......we get an automatic out each time they come up in the batting order.....so, please be on time!!!

This week........we are planning to have a final pre-season practice on Wednesday night around 7:00. Also, we are planning to have a kickoff party on Thursday evening to pass out the jerseys. Yes, I know.....a bit too much 'softball' for one week. No worries if you can't make it....but, please try. More details to follow.

Final confirmation that you can play on the team with us. In other words, are you ready to cough up $63 (registration fees + shirt)? I have to submit a final roster to the league officials on Friday night before the game. This cannot be changed until Game 6 of the season when we may add/modify team members. So, if you are having second thoughts, please speak now!!! Otherwise, I am writing your name in blood on the roster sheet.........

Looking for two players..

Greg and Amar have decided to drop out of the team as the game schedules clash with their personal lives. So, we are looking for new recruits. One might be Harroop Singh (Chethan's ex-colleague from Accenture), and another might be Karthik/Sammy's friend.

So, the search is on. One week to go for the league games to start, the first game is against Westgate. Since there are only 4 teams in our Church League, we might automatically qualify for the playoffs. Nice, eh!

We need a game song! Any suggestions, anyone? Game song, anyone?

League schedule is here..

Chethan's email abt the league schedule:

Here are two links that go to our the league homepage and the entire schedule for the season. We are in league #266 Church Co-ed with High Tech Manufacturing, Westgate, and St. Timothy's Lutheran.

Full Schedule
I'll send out the $$ damage a bit later, but we are now official. If you guys see a game that you cannot make (especially next Friday @ 7:00), please let me know as soon as you know. Thanks!!

Practice makes perfect..

Another practice session, another evening spent under the lights at the Central Park in Santa Clara. Were there 12 players, or 14? Amar was there too, havent comprehended the email message right for once! Another game type simulation. Everyone can hit, but fielding, and throwing to bases still suspect. Apurva almost took Chethan's arm off! Anyone but Chethan, this was a sure-shot fractured arm!

The above pic taken with my new E-TTL-420EX flash unit, and my EOS-20D. I love it already. I got this flash intensity even with the diffuser on, and at about 15 feet.

A Hot Hot Sunday..

Sunday morning, a practice session planned for 9AM, at the John D Morgan Park in Campbell.

Was a scorching hot day, the numbers might've hit triple digits during the day. Chethan and Sri arrived with a bunch of bagels, Sammy/Vugs provided fruit juices, and we arrived 20 mins late for practice 'cause I cudnt wakeup in time!

Chethan planned a real-game like practice session, with hitting, running between bases, with rules being explained often to us by Chet, Anjali and Amit. Between the three of them, they have a good bunch of softball experience, and a lot of patience to teach us newbies.

Leena took a nasty one on the leg, Chet took a nasty spill, but apart from that, it was a good practice. Our fielding still sucks, but I think we can score a few runs. Preetu consistently hits to the right field, while the rest of us manage hits to the left and center field. Anjali, Karthik, Robert and Chethan pitched, while the rest of us tried to get comfy in our placements on the field.

A mid-week batting-cage session planned. Wednesday, or thursday? League games start next week.

Catch session, after Xena's class

Another day, another catch session planned. At the Central Park, in Santa Clara.

Agenda:
7.05PM - 7.50PM - Xena, the warrior princess's cardio kickboxing class
8PM - 9PM - Softball practice at Central Park
9.PM - 10PM - Dinner @ Mongolian BBQ on El Camino

Central park co-ordinates:

Map of the park:
http://www.ci.santa-clara.ca.us/pdf/collateral/CentralParkMap.pdf

Blog update after the practice session:

Central park is a real well maintained park, with 2 lighted softball diamonds, and one practice area. We metup at 8PM as planned, and did some fielding, running, and hitting. Preetu, Sammy, Leena and Srivalli took a few hits while stopping ground balls... ouch.. DJ & Venu showed up for practice. DJ got hurt when she took a blinder on her knee, at about 9.45PM. We stopped the practice, and went out to Chilli's for dinner.

Pretty pooped after the cardio-kickboxing (courtesy Xena), and the softball session.

Next practice session planned for sunday morning, 10AM.

Quest for the team jersey, and jersey numbers

Now that the team is in place, the quest for designing the team jersey is on. Chethan has enquired about the costs of designing one, and the current estimate is approx $25. The jersey might even contain the Indian emblem on it. The completed the product is eagerly awaited.

Here is the current jersey number choices: Srivalli 11; Appu 33; Naveen 10; Preetu. 7; Dumma 00; Leena 9; Shrisha 8; Preeti S. 1; Karthik 5; Sammy 6; Amarnath _ ; Robert _; Greg _ ; Anjali _; Amit _ ; Chethan _; Harroop _
( _ <==> undecided)

BTW, Chethan has paid $670 for the team registration for the league. All non- San Jose residents pay $10 extra. Add the cost of the jersey = $25. Approx cost per person = $70 ($80 for non-residents).

First practice with more than 10 ppl

Sunday morn @ 9AM, on the day of the soccer WC finale, we metup at the John Morgan park in Campbell, on 450 Rincon Ave, for a practice session. Met with Anjali and Amit for the first time, Anjali has a solid throwing arm, and Amit is a real third baseman. Good recruits!! Only Greg needs to join us for practice, and our roster is full.

Tossed the ball around, did some catching, hitting, base running, in the soaring 90+ temperatures. Amar returned from his German travel to join the team. He has a real strange batting style, he walks down the pitch, very similar to slogging in the cricket matches, but he made great contact with the ball. Preethi (Chethan's neighbor) looks like a good hitter of the ball too.

Looks like Robert, Apurva and I will be manning the deep field, with me in the left field, and Robert in rght field. Amit might be on first, Anjali on second, Chethan as short-stop, and Apurva as first baseman. Preetu/Leena/Preethi/Sammy/Srivalli will take turns at catching, and deep fielding, perhaps on right field. Dumma/Karthik/Srisha might be taking turns at first-base and deep field.

Looks like we can score a few runs as everyone seems to be getting a pretty good hand at whacking the ball, but I'm not so sure of how we are gonna stop the other team from scoring. Our fielding almost sucks! But hey, this is for fun anyways!!

And it was 10.45AM, and we were done for the day. Soccer game between Italy and France for the WC finals at 11AM at Sammy/Vugs place. And on to do more fun stuff like choosing the team jersey and such.

The Desi Nationals

Chethan and I were sitting around watching a basketball game last month, and Chethan was like, we could be playing softball and start a team.. play co-ed so the girls get to shake a leg and an arm.. It got some adrenaline flowing, Chethan followed up on that, and he got a team registered in the San Jose summer co-ed league. yay! And check this out.. our team is aptly named "The Desi Nationals".

Now that the softball is gonna be a reality, we needed to form a team. Apart from Chethan and his little bro Apurva, none of the other friends who signed up had played. Yup, great start that. The other draft picks (who have swung their arms a wee bit): Greg, my P.A.Semi neighbor (he has played plenty and some), and Sammy/Karthik's friends Anjali and Amit. Anjali was a star recruit to the Desi Nationals, and yup, we got ourselves a team.

Team-members: Chethan (Captn/Coach), Apurva, Greg, Srivalli, Dumma, Leena, Sammy, Karthik, Amar, Anjali, Amit, Robert, Preethi, Srisha, Preetu and me. Thats 16, which makes up our roster. And our ball-boy is Rishon.

Practice session 1: We visited a softball batting cage in Santa Clara, and with Coach Chet guiding us, we try to shake off the cricket batting action, and try to do the softball thingie. All I can say is, playing softball is much harder than I thought. A visit to the Santa Clara Univ baseball field, and Chethan took us thro' catching, throwing, and batting basics. A couple of hours later we were done, and we were a tired lot. Now we know what first, second, third and home bases are, and ditto with short-stop, deep-fielders, yada yada yada, and yada yada yada. Long ways to go before the July 24th, when the first game will be played.

Practice session 2: Since all of us bought new softball gloves (man, these things are biiiig), we needed to break into them, we got together on the same field, and played ball. We cricketers, used to catching with bare hands, have a lot of un-learning to do. Gloves make catching much easier, especially stopping the ball, and throwing it to base. The softball is much bigger, so throwing aint that eazy either. And how do we do the chicken pose again? :)
